Dosing system

Chemical consumption Chemical consumption will be associated with boiler feed make-up water-treatment plant, dosing systems for feedwater and boiler system, treatment of cooling water circuits and effluent treatment. Typical chemical requirements for a thermal power plant are given in Table 15.9. 

Inhaled steroids (commonly used are beclomethasone, budesonide, triamcinolone, fluticasone, flunisolide) appear to attenuate the inflammatory response, to reduce bronchial hyperreactivity, to decrease exacerbations and to improve health status they may also reduce the risk of myocar dial infar ction, but they do not modify the longterm decline in lung function. Whether- steroids affect mortality remains unclear. Many patients appear to be resistant to steroids and large, long-term trials have shown only limited effectiveness of inhaled corticosteroid ther apy. Certainly, the benefit from steroids is smaller in COPD than in asthma. Topical side-effects of inhaled steroids are oropharyngeal candidiasis and hoarse voice. At the normal doses systemic side-effects of inhaled steroids have not been firmly established. The current recommendation is that the addition of inhaled gluco-coiticosteroids to bronchodilator treatment is appropriate for patients with severe to veiy sever e COPD. 

The critical void in pediatric drug therapy now lies in effective drug-delivery systems. Some inroads have been made in the manufacturing of pediatric dosing systems, particularly OTC preparations. There needs to be a redirection of the focus in nonparenteral drug formulations towards pediatric dosage forms with proven stability and bioavailability that can be easily and accurately administered to infants and children. 

Microsystems are also expected to be introduced in the near future, including for example artificial noses, fingerprint sensing systems, bar code readers, rf-tag-ging systems, microfluidic pumps and dosing systems, gas flow control systems, new flexible and low cost displays or electronic paper. 

In the future, monitoring of surface tension could be an attractive option for measuring surfactant concentration. Automatic dosing systems could also be introduced for a controlled supply of concentrated detergents. 

Systemic corticosteroids (Table 80-4) are indicated in all patients with acute severe asthma not responding completely to initial inhaled /J2-agonist administration (every 20 minutes for three to four doses). Prednisone, 1 to 2 mg/kg/day (up to 40 to 60 mg/day), is administered orally in two divided doses for 3 to 10 days. Because short-term (1 to 2 weeks), high-dose systemic steroids do not produce serious toxicities, the ideal method is to use a short burst and then maintain the patient on appropriate long-term control therapy with inhaled corticosteroids. 

Benzene is shipped in tank cars, tank trucks, barges, and drums. Transfers from one vessel to another are in dosed systems because benzene is a poisonous substance with acute toxic effects. It ll kill you in 5—10 minutes if you breathe too much. Red DOT flammable liquid labels are required.

Dry powder inhalers are generally described as breath actuated devices, because the inspiratory airstream releases the dose from the dose system and supplies the energy for the generation of fine drug particles from the powder formulation. Because the efficiency of dose release and powder disintegration increases with increasing inspiratory flow rate for most DPIs, these devices would be better described as breath controlled devices. In Section 3.9, the effect of resistance and clinical conditions on the flow curve and relevant flow parameters for DPIs are discussed.
