Dosimetry phantom

To compare exposure between different CT protocols, one can use the absorbed dose, usually reported as the CT dose index (CTDI) in mGy. This concept was introduced by Jucius and Kambic to predict the multiple slice average dose at the center of a set of axial scans [35], The product of the CTDI j and the z-axis coverage for the particular scan then yields the dose-length product (DLP), where CTDI j is the average dose in the standard head CT dosimetry phantom [36, 37],... 

In view of this, and in view of ARL s experience over the years, there were only two results of significant concern, and these have been adequately addressed (a single capsule receiving only half the required dose, and a 15.4% deviation due to a misunderstanding. Some Australian radiotherapy centres have not yet adopted the IAEA dosimetry protocol TRS 277. This protocol has been recommended by the Australian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine, and calibration factors supplied by ARL are appropriate for the use of this protocol. ARL strongly recommends the use of TRS 277 in a water phantom by all radiotherapy centres in Australia (Huntley and Nette, 1993).

In order to estimate the induced activity, the neutron dose value and the effect of interfering reactions, the distributions of thermal, epithermal, and fast neutron flux densities should be determined in a bulk media or a phantom. The most commonly used dosimetry reactions are given in O Sect. 36.3 of the Appendix of this Volume. In the case of a phantom, the combination of the activation detectors and the physical integration methods is recommended for the determination of the volume averaged dose equivalent rates and through it the total dose absorbed by a given organ (Csikai et al. 1988).
