Small domains

Figure 2.19 Organization of polypeptide chains into domains. Small protein molecules like the epidermal growth factor, EGF, comprise only one domain. Others, like the serine proteinase chymotrypsin, are arranged in two domains that are required to form a functional unit (see Chapter 11). Many of the proteins that are involved in blood coagulation and fibrinolysis, such as urokinase, factor IX, and plasminogen, have long polypeptide chains that comprise different combinations of domains homologous to EGF and serine proteinases and, in addition, calcium-binding domains and Kringle domains. Frequency-domain and time-domain small-amplitude techniques provide unique advantages for both analytical and fundamental studies. They tend to be more sensitive than large-amplitude techniques and are often more precise. These advantages result from the ease with which the signal can be distinguished from... [Pg.161]

Fig. 14 a Benzene on Ni(lll) forms mirror domains with the mirror plane parallel to the [110] surface lattice direction. The unit cell is rotated either by + 19.1° or by - 19.1° with respect to the [110] direction of the substrate. The van der Waals radii around the hydrogen atoms show that the structure is closely packed, b Schematic drawing of the LEED pattern. The unit cell periodicity of substrate (large hexagon) and adlayer for both mirror domains (small hexagonal prisms, open and closed circles) are indicated... [Pg.225]

However, the situation is not as serious as it may look. For physical reasons, we expect that scaling laws exist in the critical domain (small (T — Tc) or large N). In other words, it can be expected that, in this limit, the various physical quantities depend only on one fundamental parameter, which is the characteristic length of the system, and eventually on a few finite dimensionless parameters. For the Landau-Ginzburg model, the fundamental length is the correlation length, and for a polymer-system, the fundamental length is the size of an isolated swollen polymer. [Pg.480]

For applicable values of 5 and mutual diffusivities in polymer domain/small-molecule systems, resulting order-of-magnitude estimates for the diffusion time are shown in Table 6.1.1. [Pg.285]

Domains and Below its Curie temperature, a ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic material is composed of Hysteresis domains —small-volume regions in which all net dipole moments are mutually aligned and the magnetization is saturated (Figure 20.11). [Pg.832]

The WAXD patterns of the four types of PLA membranes are shown in Figure 3.11. The WAXD patterns of Type I membranes show only broad peaks. By contrast, several sharp peaks near the diffraction angles, 16° and 19°, were observed in Type II to Type IV membranes. This result indicates that the nonimmersed PLA membranes are amorphous, whereas the solvent-immersed PLA membranes exhibit a crystalline structure. By contrast. Type I PLA membranes showed broad peaks. Despite the appearance of crystalline domains, small crystalline peaks may be masked inside the broad amorphous peaks. [Pg.90]
