It is of historical interest that the scientist who did the pioneering X-ray studies of DNA which led to the understanding of its structure was Rosalind Franklin, who died at age 37 before the Nobel prize for the DNA discovery was awarded a personal and very accessible account of the research that led to the discovery is given by I.D. Watson in his short book The Double Helix A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA [231]. 

One of the greatest scientific revolutions in history is now under way in molecular biology, as scientists are learning how to manipulate and harness the genetic machinery of organisms. None of the extraordinary advances of the past two decades would have been possible, however, were it not for the discovery in L977 of methods for sequencing immense DNA chains.
