These compounds can either be homopolymerizable (e.g. divinylbenzene, divinylethers) or non-homopolymerizable (e.g. double diphenylethylenes DDPE). The use of divinylbenzene, DVB, was first recognized by Eschwey and Burchard [167] and developed mainly by Rempp and colleagues [168-171]. The general reactions are given in Scheme 90. 

Materials. The radical-type photopolymerizable formulation consisted of a mixture of hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA from UCB) and a polyurethane-diacrylate (Actilane 20 from Arkros). A bis-acylphosphine oxide (BAPO from Ciba) was used as photoinitiator at a typical concentration of 1 wt %. The cationic type photopolymerizable resin consisted of a mixture of the divinylether of triethyleneglycol (RapiCure DVE-3 from ISP) and a divinylether derivative of bis-phenol A (DVE-BPA). The cationic photoinitiator (Cyracure UVI-6990 from Union Carbide) had a composition of 50 wt % of mixed triarylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate salts and 50 wt % of propylene carbonate. Crosslinked co-polymers of 4-allyloxystyrene can be obtained by the addition of small amounts of divinylethers, di-functional alkoxystyrene monomers or propeny-loxystyrene monomers, such as (2) or (3), in the cationically active composition. The polymers obtained from these mixtures by cationic polymerization are insoluble in organic solvents and generally exhibit good mechanical and adhesive properties. 

Postpolymerization of difunctional monomers to effect star branching has been successfully applied in cationic polymerization, e.g. in the case of polyisobutylene initiated with 2-chloro-2,4,4,-trimethylpentane/TiCl4. Addition of divinylbenzene leads to star polymers [104], Vinyl ethers, when polymerized with HI/ZnI2 in toluene at — 40°C, can be copolymerized with divinylether... 

The reaction of 2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethanol (119) with divinylether (118) under different conditions gives three products, namely, the expected vinyl acetal (120) and the bis-acetal (121) from addition of one and two equivalents of 2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethanol, respectively, and the vinyl ether (122), which results from franx-etherification of (118) with loss of acetaldehyde. Shackelford and co-workers found that by altering the nature of the Lewis acid catalyst and the reaction stoichiometry they were able to alter the distribution ratio of these products.

Butandiol divinylether is very ineffective in crosslinking vinylacetate, so even using 8% the crosslinking density is low. 

Triethyleneglycol divinylether (100 mmol) and 1,6-hexanediol (200 mmol) were dissolved in 100 ml THF and a catalytic amount (approximately 10 mg) of p-toluenesulfonic acid. The mixture refluxed 30 minutes, was concentrated, and the product isolated as a colorless oil.

Thanks to their high polymerizability, low-shrinkage level, low-toxicity and low volatility, telechelic vinylether-based resins appear to be an attractive alternative to aerylate UV-cured systems suitable for various applications, and in particular as protective coatings. Moreover, a broad range of vinylether compounds are now commercially available. Indeed, in the past few years, thermal and photo-induced cationic crosslinking polymerization of simple eommercial divinylethers have been thoroughly studied in term of kineties and also from the viewpoint of materials properties. ... 

A one-step procedure now becomes feasible using the dual behavior of particular dyes able to generate both radical and cationic species and allowing a simultaneous or concomitant radical/cationic photopolymerization reaction of acrylate (e.g. (TMPTA)/diepoxide or divinylether) blends (see a recent review in [XIA 14]) that can be achieved under blue to red lights.
