Visual distraction

Finally, there are some points of interest identified here that can be considered for fiirther research for example the role of distracters- visual or auditory- in alleviating boredom and thereby increasing capability and concentration, or acting to distract when greater cognitive capacity is needed and thereby decreasing safety margins. 

Driver distraction occurs when a driver engages, willingly or tmwillingly, in a secondary activity which interferes with performance of the primary driving task. There are three main mechanisms of distraction visual distraction, whereby the secondary activity can take the driver s eyes off the road attentional distraction, whereby the driver s attention is taken away from the driving task and physical interference, whereby secondary activities physically interfere with control of the vehicle (Regan, 2005). 

The advantage of this technique is that no assumptions need to be made about the type of distribution underlying the data and that many sets of observations can be visually compared without being distracted by the individual numbers. Although caffeine increases response speed in some visual attention taste, it is apparently not due to decreased distractibility or suppression of irrelevant responses (Kenemans and Verbaten 1998). Cognitive decline is evident during withdrawal from caffeine, primarily on measures of response time and sustained attention (Bernstein et al. 1998). The incident scene is sometimes a desirable location for the interview. When the interview is conducted at the incident scene, it will seem less like an interview and more like an informal discussion this will help to relax the witness. The visual cues at the incident scene may help the witness to remember information. The witness will also have something to do during the interview, walking around and pointing out equipment, which will put him more at ease so he will tend to talk more. There is also a great deal of information that the witness will commimicate at the incident scene that they may not otherwise think to tell the interviewer, for example, the distance between a valve and indicator. However, there are some reasons not to conduct the interview at the accident scene. They include the potential distractions at the scene such as other personnel, repair activities, demolition activities, the presence of other potential witnesses, unsafe conditions. In addition, poor weather can also be a problem. Finally, the accident scene may be too emotionally painful for the witness, especially if a friend of the witness was injured or killed.
