Distance of observation

Factors that influence fight scattering include the effect of particle size, wavelength dependence, distance of observation, effect of polarization of incident fight, the concentration of the particles, and the molecular weight of the particles.

LIDAR is an acronym for light detection and ranging . The technique uses the same principles as RADAR, an acronym for radiowave detection and ranging . RADAR is used for measuring the distance of an object from an observer. The time taken for radiowave radiation to travel to and from the object, which reflects or backscatters the radiation, is readily translated into a measurement of distance. 

The scraper or knife discharge consists of a blade that removes the cake from the dmm by direct contact with the filter cake. It is normally used for granular materials with cake thickness greater than about 6 mm. In order not to damage the filter cloth, a safety distance of 1 to 3 mm between the blade and the cloth must be observed. If the residual layer is made not of filter aid but of the product, there is danger of its blocking by fine particles and by successive consoHdation by the scraper blade.

When placed at a distance from the observer s eye the crosshatch lines merge and appear as a uniform shade of gray. There is a standard size for this chart (BS 2742C 1957), and this has the five shades from 0 to 4. The chart is usually viewed from a distance of 15 meters and hence has to be mounted on a tripod, which should not shadow the card. The chart should be set up in such a position that the smoke being measured has the same sky background as the chart. It should not be placed so that the sun is either directly behind the chart or directly in front of it. Comparisons can then be made between the shade of the smoke and that on the card.
