Dissolved organic carbon matter

For aerobic degradation, uptake of oxygen or the evolution of carbon dioxide is most widely used. Use of the concentration of dissolved organic carbon may present technical problems when particulate matter is present, though analysis of dissolved inorganic carbon in a closed system has been advocated (Birch and Fletcher 1991), and may simultaneously overcome problems with poorly soluble or volatile compounds. 

Dissolved organic carbon and plant- or microbe- produced phytosiderophores increase the solubility of most trace elements in arid and semi-arid soils. This is especially important in arid regions. High pH increases the solubility of organic matter as dissolved organic carbon in arid soils. Copper, lead and nickel have a strong tendency to form complexes, while Cd complexes are weaker. The most common partition coefficient encountered in environmental work (Sect. 2.1.4) is the octanol water partition coefficient (K0VI) and the solid phase carbon-water partition coefficient (Koc).
