A gross slip condition, where sliding is induced within the whole contact interface after a preliminary partial slip stage. This condition is associated to trapezoidal tangential load/displacement loops. The plateau value of the tangential load provides a measurement of the coefficient of friction, //. = Q /P, where Q and P are the plateau value of the tangential load and the imposed normal load respectively. [Pg.163]

ATPase family. To accomplish the exchange, the single-stranded DNA displaces one of the strands of the double helix (Figure 28.48). The resulting three-stranded structure is called a displacement loop or D loop. This process is often referred to as strand invasion. Because a free 3 end is now bound to a contiguous strand of DNA, the 3 end can act as a primer to initiate new DNA synthesis. Strand invasion can initiate many processes, including the repair of double-stranded breaks and the reinitiation of replication after the replication apparatus has come off its template. In the repair of a break, the recombination partner is an intact DNA molecule with an overlapping sequence. [Pg.813]

The elastomer rubber layers serve as the isolation (i.e., stiffness and fundamental structural frequency reduction) component lead also contributes to the stiffness of the bearing, but this contribution is relatively minor. The steel shim plates assist with vertical load support. The lead core mainly serves as the damping (i.e., energy dissipation) component. A typical hysteretic (force-displacement) loop for a lead-rubber bearing is shown in Fig. 4 (Constantinou et al. 2007b). [Pg.1288]

An idealized force-displacement loop for a lead-mbber bearing is shown in Fig. 5 (Constantinou et al. 2007b) with its significant parameters/mechanical properties being the characteristic strength, Qj, and the post-elastic stiffness, Kd, defined as follows ... [Pg.1289]
