Disease theory modern

An historical aside may clarify the issues. In the medical tradition that went from the ancients (Hippocrates and Galen) through the Middle Ages until the Enlightenment, physicians basically thought about disease in terms of mechanism. The conventional theory of humors was a crude attempt to describe illness in terms of imbalances in body composition, before the invention of modern chemistry and biochemistry. [Pg.852]

Through this work with chemicals and mixtures, these early scientists began to develop medical theories about the human body. They believed that disease and illness were caused by an imbalance in the body s chemical system. To restore this balance and make the body healthy, certain chemicals or medications needed to be added to the body. This theory is one of the foundations of modern medicine. [Pg.51]

In this paper we present a unified theory of human CVD. This disease is the direct consequence of the inability of man to synthesize ascorbate in combination with insufficient intake of ascorbate in the modern diet. Since ascorbate deficiency is the common cause of human CVD, ascorbate supplementation is the universal treatment for this disease. The available epidemiological and clinical evidence is reasonably convincing. Further clinical confirmation of this theory should lead to the abolition of CVD as a cause of human mortality for the present generation and future generations of mankind. [Pg.623]
