A simple unifying theory to explain rate and specificity in atom abstraction reactions has yet to be developed. However, as with addition reactions, it is possible to devise a set of guidelines to predict qualitatively the rate and outcome of radical transfer processes. The following are based on those suggested by Tedder 2... [Pg.36]

The various copolymerization models that appear in the literature (terminal, penultimate, complex dissociation, complex participation, etc.) should not be considered as alternative descriptions. They are approximations made through necessity to reduce complexity. They should, at best, be considered as a subset of some overall scheme for copolymerization. Any unified theory, if such is possible, would have to take into account all of the factors mentioned above. The models used to describe copolymerization reaction mechanisms arc normally chosen to be the simplest possible model capable of explaining a given set of experimental data. They do not necessarily provide, nor are they meant to be, a complete description of the mechanism. Much of the impetus for model development and drive for understanding of the mechanism of copolymerization conies from the need to predict composition and rates. Developments in models have followed the development and application of analytical techniques that demonstrate the inadequacy of an earlier model. [Pg.337]

During recent decades a great amount of knowledge about the properties of atomic nuclei has been gathered. An extensive theory of nucleonic interactions and nuclear structure [liquid-drop theory (7), shell theory (2, 3), unified theory (4), cluster theory (5—7)] has been developed... [Pg.816]

The relationship between cosmology and elementary particle physics is one of the frontier fields currently pursued by the Global Foundation. There is amongst physicists and cosmologists a consensus that a unified theory of the large and the small (cosmology and elementary particles) is essential to a complete description of either. Foundation conferences are an opportunity for scientists to present and discuss their research and theories towards such a unification. [Pg.21]

What one requires is a self-consistent picture of the interface, including both metal and electrolyte, so that, for a given surface charge, one has distributions of all species of metal and electrolyte phases. Unified theories have proved too difficult but, happily, it seems that some decoupling of the two phases is possible, because the details of the metal-electrolyte interaction are not so important. Thus, one can calculate the structure of each part of the interface in the field of the other, so that the distributions of metal species are appropriate to the field of the electrolyte species, and vice versa. [Pg.89]

The tendency of proteins to adsorb at interfaces is determined by many variables, including the pH, the ionic strength, the properties of the protein molecules and the interfaces, and the nature of the solvent and other components present. The process of protein adsorption is complicated, and despite the great volume of work over the past decades, a unified theory is still far ahead. Yet, some principles may be indicated. [Pg.100]
