Liquid crystallinity can be attained in polymers of various polymer architectures, allowing the chemist to combine properties of macromolecules with the anisotropic properties of LC-phases. Mesogenic imits can be introduced into a polymer chain in different ways, as outhned in Fig. 1. For thermotropic LC systems, the LC-active units can be connected directly to each other in a condensation-type polymer to form the main chain ( main chain liquid crystalline polymers , MCLCPs) or they can be attached to the main chain as side chains ( side chain liquid crystalline polymers , SCLCPs). Calamitic (rod-Uke) as well as discotic mesogens have successfully been incorporated into polymers. Lyotropic LC-systems can also be formed by macromolecides. Amphiphihc block copolymers show this behavior when they have well-defined block structures with narrow molecular weight distributions. [Pg.45]

The most obvious family of compounds able to induce columnar phases is that constituted by the macrocyclic compounds which often possess a discoid molecular shape. The ability of macrocyclic systems to stack and to self-assemble into columnar mesophases confers on these systems the properties required for potential utilization in molecular devices based on photonics, electronics, or low-dimensional ionic transport. The search for new discotic mesogens is thus still of current interest, in order to improve their chemical, thermal, and photophysical stabihty, and new families of discogenic materials appear regularly. [Pg.374]

Another research group published numerous studies of syntheses and physical properties of LC-polyethers having linear chains, hyperbranched and cyclic structures or containing discotic mesogens [327-341]. All these different LC-polyethers were prepared via the normal Williamson ether synthesis involving the nucleophilic attack of a phenoxide ion onto a bromoalkane. For instance, numerous linear LC-polyesters were prepared from the mesogenic diphenols outlined in (214) and formulas (215a,b) [327,337]. [Pg.494]

Vorlander also had the idea to look for mesogenic properties in the cases of star-like or cross-like molecules, however, his coworker did not have any success in this area [5, 6]. About 1977, Chandrasekhar et al. [7] and Billard et al. [8] were, independently, able to prove that disk-like molecules can in fact form mesophases, called columnar phases. We start by reminding ourselves that columnar discotic liquid crystals are comprised of disordered stacks (1-dimensional fluids) of disc-shaped molecules arranged on a two-dimensional lattice (Fig. 1) [1]. Several mixtures of hexanethiol capped gold nanopartides and triphenylene based discotic LCs have been studied. These mixtures display liquid crystal behavior (columnar mesophases) and an enhancement in the DC conductivity, due to the inclusion of gold nanoparticies into the matrix of the organic LC [70]. Other studies of mixtures of gold nanoparticies with mesogens indude a series of cholesteryl phenoxy alkanoates.
