Success. Sustainability is considered a catalyst for enlightened and disciplined management, and, thus, a crucial success factor. 

Ideally, those responsible for supply chain change in a business unit would follow a deliberate process similar to the model shown in Figure 13.1. An organization needs a structure like this to control the change process and communicate that process to its employees. A disciplined management team will insist on it. 

Engineering of process plant projects increasingly involves the application of a disciplined management system to ensure that the quality of product or service is built-in at every stage. In this context, quality is defined as fitness for purpose — that is, the product must be fit for the purpose for which it is designed. 

At point A, despite full management commitment to safety performance, with low employee commitment to safety, the number of accidents remains high employees only follow procedures laid out because they feel they have to. At the other extreme, point B, when employee commitment is high, the number of accidents reduces dramatically employees feel responsible for their own safety as well as that of their colleagues. Employee commitment to safety is an attitude of mind rather than a taught discipline, and can be enhanced by training and (less effectively) incentive schemes. 

Unless some discipline is imposed, engineering personnel, especially where contractors are involved, will define far more alarms than plant operations require. This situation may be addressed by simply setting the alarm hmits to values such that the alarms never occur. However, changes in alarms and alarm hmits are changes from the perspec tive of the Process Safety Management regulations. It is prudent to impose the necessary discipline to avoid an excessive number of alarms. Potential guidelines are as follows ...

A useful way to approach this is to develop your proposal (1) as if key managers are unable to participate in a meeting, but request a full briefing, or (2) as though you have a sudden emergency and a colleague must stand in for you. This means you cannot rely on brief, cryptic bullet points on an overhead slide, or fall back on "I ll cover that in the Q and A." This approach means more work on the front end, but the discipline it requires is likely to pay off in terms of results since it helps assure comprehensive treatment of the subject and a more thorough appreciation from your audience.

Businesses require funds for day-to-day operations ( working capital ) and for expansion by acquisition and for the provision of plant and machinery, buildings, etc. Most working capital needs are normally (and should be) met from the company s own cash generated from its own operations. Indeed, the need to meet this criterion serves as a discipline upon the company s standard of cash management in relation to credit control, payment of suppliers, etc. 

These challenges are critical to the profession of chemical engineering, the chemical industry, and our country. The methodology is rapidly changing and extremely complex and reqrrires both technical input and input from professionals with expertise in legal, economic, judicial, medical, regrrlatory, and public perception issues.
