Direct drilling

In today s operations a mud motor or a mud turbine are mostly used for directional drilling. Rotary drilling may be carried out between mud motor / turbine drilling i.e. the use of these is often restricted to a certain interval only. 

Whether on land or offshore, the principle of satellite development is the same. A new field is accessed with wells, and an export link is installed to the existing (host) facility. Development is not always easier on land, as environmental restrictions mean that some onshore fields have to be developed using directional drilling techniques (originally associated with offshore developments). A vertical well can be drilled offshore away from the host facility, and the well completed using a subsea wellhead. 

Production of crude oil and natural gas involves technologies that have become increasingly complex as the remaining resources have become more difficult to locate and remove from their subsurface locations. Many new discoveries are made in sediments below the ocean floor in deep-water, and thus require removal of the oil and gas through long water columns. Other situations now require directional drilling of wells so that production involves transfers along wells that arc far from vertical.
