A hydrosilylation/cyclization process forming a vinylsilane product need not begin with a diyne, and other unsaturation has been examined in a similar reaction. Alkynyl olefins and dienes have been employed,97 and since unlike diynes, enyne substrates generally produce a chiral center, these substrates have recently proved amenable to asymmetric synthesis (Scheme 27). The BINAP-based catalyst employed in the diyne work did not function in enyne systems, but the close relative 6,6 -dimethylbiphenyl-2,2 -diyl-bis(diphenylphosphine) (BIPHEMP) afforded modest yields of enantio-enriched methylene cyclopentane products.104 Other reported catalysts for silylative cyclization include cationic palladium complexes.105 10511 A report has also appeared employing cobalt-rhodium nanoparticles for a similar reaction to produce racemic product.46...

Asymmetric hydrogenation has been achieved with dissolved Wilkinson type catalysts (A.J. Birch, 1976 D. Valentine, Jr., 1978 H.B. Kagan, 1978). The (R)- and (S)-[l,l -binaph-thalene]-2,2 -diylbis[diphenylphosphine] (= binap ) complexes of ruthenium (A. Miyashita, 1980) and rhodium (A. Miyashita, 1984 R. Noyori, 1987) have been prepared as pure atrop-isomers and used for the stereoselective Noyori hydrogenation of a-(acylamino) acrylic acids and, more significantly, /3-keto carboxylic esters. In the latter reaction enantiomeric excesses of more than 99% are often achieved (see also M. Nakatsuka, 1990, p. 5586). 

So far as we know, this approach has been used only once, although it should be capable of extension. The octahedrally coordinated rhodiacyclopentadiene complex 94, which results from the reaction of [RhCl(PPh3)3] with 2 mol of (2-phenyl-ethynyl)diphenylphosphine, reacts with diphenylacetylene to give the di-strapped arene-rhodium(I) complex 95, from which the p-terphenyl-based bis (diphenylphosphine) can be released by heating with NaCN [Eq. (19)].84...
