Often, however, the information available is so indefinite that the search is hopeless from the beginning. The folklore that rheumatism can be cured by infusion of rheumatism rooP or rheumatism weed suggests the identification of this herb with a view to further investigation. Clute (2) has listed all such vernacular descriptive plant designations. Rheumatism root may be Chelone glabra (Scrophulariaceae), Chimaphila maculata (Ericaceae), Apocynum cannabinum (Apocynaceae), Jeffersonia diphylla (Berberidaceae), or even Dioscorea villosa (Dioscoreaceae), whereas the name rheumatism weed has been assigned to another species of Apocynum. [Pg.56]

The chemist Russel Marker conducted an intense search in the 1940s in Mexico for a steroidal natural product that could be used to prepare some of the hormonal steroids. His research soon centered on the Mexican wild yam Dioscorea villosa as a potential source of those compounds. Treating the saponin dioscin (7-1) with mild acid, he found, gave the aglycone diosgenin (7-2) (Scheme 2.7). [Pg.23]
