Dinitrosopiperazine

N-nitrosamines have been shown to produce tumors in 39 animal species, including monkeys, birds, fish, and amphibia.2 Although there is no direct evidence, for all practical purposes, they possess a carcinogenic risk to humans.3 [Pg.246]

Pour a solution of 0.3 M potassium permanganate in 3 M sulfuric acid over the area of the spill. Leave overnight. Absorb the liquid by covering with a 1 1 1 mixture by weight of ash, clay cat litter (bentonite), and sand. Scoop the mixture into a container and, in the fume hood, slowly add it to a pail of cold water. If necessary, neutralize the solution with soda ash. Decant or filter the mixture into the drain with a large volume of water. Discard the solid residue with normal refuse.4,5 [Pg.247]

Wear protective gloves, laboratory coat, and goggles. Perform all operations in the fume hood. Dissolve the dinitrosopiperazine (300 pg) in 50 mL of 3 M sulfuric acid (8.5 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid slowly added to 41.5 mL of cold water). Add potassium permanganate (2.4 g), swirl until dissolved, and allow to stand at room temperature for at least 8 hours. If necessary, add additional potassium permanganate to maintain the purple color of the solution. Neutralize the solution by cautiously adding 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, and then add, while stirring, a saturated solution of sodium bisulfite (approximately 10 g of sodium bisulfite per 35 mL of water) until a colorless solution is formed. Wash into the drain with water.4. [Pg.247]

A few reactions of A-nitrosopiperazines have been reported recently. At least some such piperazines undergo facile transnitrosation and may be used to nitrosate other secondary bases or the like. For example, 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-dinitrosopiperazine (31) with piperidine (32), at pH 1.7 in the presence of sodium thiocyanate as catalyst, gave 2,6-dimethyl-4-nitrosopiperazine (33) and 1-nitrosopiperidine (34).763,cf-954... [Pg.264]

The rodential metabolism of 1,4-dinitrosopiperazine (37) gave A-nitrosodi-ethanolamine (38) (7%) and A-(2-hydroxyethyl)-A-nitrosoglycine (39) (30%), as well as other minor products.1225... [Pg.264]
