An equimolar solution of dimethylzinc and dimethylmercury exhibited two sharp resonances indicating no or slow exchange. A similar observation was made with the dimethylcadmium-dimethylmercury system. The mean lifetime of a methyl group before exchange, therefore, has been estimated to be greater than 0.08 second for the first system and greater than 0.14 second for the latter system. [Pg.256]

Information for other organometallic compounds is scarce. The corresponding methyl and ethyl derivatives of mercury, tin, and silicon were shown to undergo redistribution to yield random equilibrium mixtures of all possible metal alkyls. Rapid intermolecular exchange of the methyl groups in mixtures of trimethylaluminum-dimethylcadmium and dimethylzinc-dimethylcadmium was also demonstrated by NMR. Dimethylcadmium forms an 1 1 adduct with dioxane which is used in metal-organic chemical vapor deposition of cadmium sulfide. This material is a self-organized monodimensional array, 23, formed via O Cd bonds (2.88 and 2.75 A). The coordination geometry around cadmium is rather curious the methyl groups are arranged linearly (C-Cd-C 173.0°), other angles being as follows O-Cd-0 114.2°, C-Cd-O 88.8° and 93.5°. Some association between dimethylcadmium and dioxane is also maintained in benzene solution [44]. [Pg.104]

Although 2-picoline and 3-picoline have 3-fold internal rotation symmetry, they can be considered to have local 6-fold symmetry. The essentially free rotation in but-2-yne determined from thermodynamic calculations has been confirmed by recent spectroscopic measurements.
