2.3- Dimercapto-l-propanol

A 50.0-mL solution containing Ni2+ and Zn2+ was treated with 25.0 mL of 0.045 2 M EDTA to bind all the metal. The excess unreacted EDTA required 12.4 mL of 0.012 3 M Mg2+ for complete reaction. An excess of the reagent 2,3-dimercapto-l-propanol was then added to displace the EDTA from zinc. Another 29.2 mL of Mg2+ were required for reaction with the liberated EDTA. Calculate the molarity of Ni2+ and Zn2+ in the original solution. [Pg.249]

The treatment for nickel carbonyl poisoning involves intramuscular injection of BAL (2,3-dimercapto-l-propanol).2... [Pg.117]

Complex 2 also reacts directly with 2,3-dimercapto-l-propanol, or meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid to give 215 (as a mixture of cis/trans isomers) and 216, respectively.65... [Pg.248]

The pharmacological tools to detoxify arsenicals are sulphydryl reagents. The classic drug for that purpose is 2,3-dimercapto-l-propanol, dimercaprol (British antilewisite, BAL). Since this compound has side effects and a low safety ratio, new analogs with less adverse effects have been developed, e.g. dimercaptopropanesulphonate, dimercaptosuc-cinic acid and dithioerythritol . The efficiency and toxicity of these agents need to be further evaluated. [Pg.720]

The limited success with sodium citrate led to the trial and error testing of other chelating agents. Despite the fact that hard Lewis acids such as plutonium do not bind strongly to sulfur ligands, the success of 2,3-dimercapto-l-propanol, BAL, as an efficient chelator for arsenic79) led to testing its ability to remove actinides. As expected on a chemical basis, excretion of plutonium was not enhanced by treatment... [Pg.168]

Thiols have a marked tendency to bond to mercury, and the word mercaptan comes from the Latin mercurium captans, which means seizing mercury. The drug dimercaprol is used to treat mercury and lead poisoning it is 2,3-dimercapto-l-propanol. [Pg.671]

Sites which actively transport anions are present in those two organs in which toxic metals frequently concentrate the liver (Meier 1988) and the kidneys (M0ller and Sheikh 1983 Pritchard and Miller 1992). Using these criteria we can sort out those chelating agents used in the clinic (Fig. 5). BAL (British Anti-Lewisite or 2,3-dimercapto-l-propanol) is electrically... [Pg.283]
