Dilation lateral

Possible abnormalities that can be observed include microphthalmia/anophthalmia, retinal fold, dilated lateral ventricles, and hemorrhages affecting the brain. [Pg.236]

If Ihe particles tend to form a bed, they will be affected by the lateral dispersive forces described by Bagnold<69-70). A fluid in passing through a loose bed of particles exerts a dilating action on the system. This gives rise to a dispersion of the particles in a direction at right angles to the flow of fluid. [Pg.215]

Figure 20. (a) The (dimensionless) lateral compressibility (dilatational modulus, elastic area expansion modulus) (left ordinate) and the dimensionless area per molecule (right ordinate) as a function of the tail length (t) of the PC lipids in equilibrium bilayer membranes. The conversion to real compressibilities and areas per molecule is discussed in the text, (b) The (dimensionless) surface tension and the (dimensionless) lateral compressibility as a function of the relative expansion for the C PC lipid... [Pg.74]

Angiotensin converting enzymes- inhibitors (ACE-inhibitors) are a group of drugs that are very potent in dilating the blood vessels and through this mechanism lower the blood pressure. Therefore they can also improve heart function in patients with heart failure. In some cases they are also used for preventing renal failure in persons with hypertension and/or diabetes. Paradoxically, this later use of ACE-inhibitors... [Pg.62]

NO (molecular weight = 30) is small but plays a big role in physiological regulation, not least in the vasculature where its effects were first seen (see Chapter 4). Endothelium-derived relaxation factor (EDRF) was discovered its ability to cause dilatation of vessels by relaxing the arterial muscle layer. Only much later was EDRF discovered to be a gas, nitric oxide. More recent interest in NO is based on the evidence that it is antiatherogenic. The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is complex but many of the known effects of NO can be implicated in this common and serious condition. [Pg.133]

We have developed expressions for each component of the normal strain rate //, which are interpreted as relative elongation (contraction) rates in each of the coordinate directions. It will be useful in later derivations of the conservation equations to relate the volumetric dilatation (1/V)(DV/Dt) to the strain field. Consider a cylindrical differential element dV = rdrdOdz. After a short time interval dr, the element has strained in all three dimensions, resulting in an altered volume, Fig. 2.10. To first order, the relative volume change has three components as can be seen geometrically from the figure,... [Pg.38]

QUALITATIVE COMMENTS (with 25 mg) The intoxication was there at an hour and a quarter, and I was hit with nausea with no particular warning. I am shaky, a little dilated in the eyes, and there is a modest depersonalization (reminding me of LSD). Time might be slightly slowed, and there is a mild ataxia in the legs. A couple of hours later, all effects are going away fast. I ate an apple, but maybe my mouth didn t work quite right. The apple was incredibly noisy. ... [Pg.315]

A 32-year-old woman, a smoker, had an evacuation after the death of her fetus at 18 weeks. Two pessaries of gemeprost 1 mg were inserted 7.25 hours apart, and about 90 minutes later she became unconscious, apneic, and cyanotic, and had dilated pupils and no detectable blood pressure or pulse. She was given 100% oxygen, intravenous adrenaline and dobutamine, and a crystalloid infusion. Her systolic pressure rose to 100 mmHg. Coronary angiography showed left and circumflex coronary artery spasm. [Pg.120]

No doubt in part because of ethical controversies it has sometimes been difficult to mount adequate controlled studies, especially in the USA. Many women and practitioners have retained a preference for dilatation and evacuation as a means of performing abortion rather than using a medicinal technique. In a pilot study at Chapel Hill, North Carolina oral mifepristone 200 mg followed 2 days later by vaginal and oral misoprostol was compared with the surgical method (11). Of 47 women eligible for the trial, 29 declined to participate, primarily because of a preference for dilatation and evacuation. Of the 18 participants enrolled, nine were randomized to treatment with mifepristone + misoprostol and 9 to dilatation and evacuation. Mifepristone + misoprostol caused more pain and adverse events, although none was serious.)... [Pg.286]
