Fluconazole (Diflucan) may be better absorbed and is possibly less hepatotoxic than ketoconazole, but it is considerably more expensive, an important consideration given the required length of therapy for most cutaneous fungal diseases. [Pg.492]

Primarily as a consequence of three important products loosing exclusivity, the sales of the world s number one pharmaceutical company, Pfizer (according to Pfizer s annual report for 2005), dropped by 4%, from 46.1 billlion to 44.3 billion between 2004 and 2005. The sales of the single products nosedived as follows Neurontin (gabapentin) from 2723 million in 2004 to 639 million in 2005 (-77%), Diflucan (Fluconazole) from 945 million to 498 (-47%), and Accupril/Accuretic (quinapril) from 665 million to 294 million (-56%). The combined loss in revenue was 2902 million year-on-year. [Pg.95]

Azole derivatives currently available for oral treatment of systemic mycosis include fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), and others. As discussed in Chapter 48, imidazole derivatives act by affecting the permeability of the cell membrane of sensitive cells through alterations of the biosynthesis of lipids, especially sterols, in the fungal cell. [Pg.1290]
