Reduction of the solution temperature allows transition from steady-state to peak-shaped response simply by way of the marked diminution of D at low temperatures. Figure 16.5 shows slow-scan cyclic voltammograms obtained at two microdisk electrodes as a function of solution temperature. Between -120 and -140°C there is a particularly clear transition for the 25-pm-diameter electrode as the diffusion-layer thickness becomes less than the disk radius. Also illustrated here is the immense decrease in the limiting currents that is seen over this range of temperatures due to the 100-fold decrease in D. [Pg.500]

The best established effect of ultrasound in electrochemistry is the diminution of the diffusion layer and the enhanced limiting currents so produced. The deposition of polonium on metal wires gives rise to a useful a-source. Tips of metal wires having a length 10 mm and a diameter of 0.2 mm were utilized. They were made of Al, Ni, Pd, Pt or An. Each was immersed in 100 pi of a solution containing °Po (300 Bqml ) for 15 h at 27°. Alpha particle emission was measured using a liquid scintillation system. There was an observed diminution in the a-pulse spectra for all of the wires except Al. This was attributed to the mutual diffusion between the wire metal and °Po. The °Po deposited on the Al wire had a tendency to be eluted with the liquid scintillator. This was attributed to physical absorption on the porous metal oxide layer on the Al wire and °Po. The °Po deposited by the Al wire had a tendency to be eluted with the liquid scintillator. It was possible to prepare a °Po -Al wire as a useful a-source by heating at 120° for 30 minutes. [Pg.3936]

After the underground nuelear explosion in India, in May, 1998, die aerosol partieles were eoneentrated on and above the tropopause, before the aerosol layer of inereased coneentration eame. On May, 14 the aerosol eloud 4.8 km diiek was fixed with a maximum eoneentration at 12.4 km (7 =23.6). The layer enveloped the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere the tropopause being diffused wifliout any preeise boundary of division. By May 17, the maximum of the layer moved lower, to 5.63 km, and die maximum of the distanee ratio had reaehed a large value - / ai=70.8. The aerosol eloud was loeated on the deseendent anti-eyelone leg of die jet stream, with an average settling veloeity - of 2.25 km per diem, and a veloeity of diminution — Rof 15.7 units per diem. [Pg.409]

The response of the QCM also reflects the dissipation of energy within the system and hence changes of viscoelastic properties of the CG matrix and cellular overlayers. The QCM study shows that interactions of fibroblast cells with the CG occur relatively quickly since the /minima are reached during 3-5 min. Subsequent diminution of the lAfl value (by 13%) after the second minimum is due to removal of a portion of cells because of several factors. The liquid flow can wash off the cells from the outer surface of the CG matrix, which can be enhanced by sensor longitudinal vibrations. The repulsive interaction of cells from the second portion with pre-adsorbed cells, attached after the first injection onto the outer surface without migration into deeper CG layers, can result in weakening of the cell attachment. The last effect is similar to the effect of a pre-adsorbed protein on a subsequently adsorbed protein observed on the diffusion study discussed earlier. However, it is very weak due to a small portion of the CG surface covered by attached cells. [Pg.639]
