Differentiation, retinoid induced organ culture

In a different system, mouse mammary glands in organ culture in chemically defined medium in the presence of insulin respond to the hormone prolactin by exhibiting end-bud differentiation. The addition of either 10 A/ retinoic acid or lV-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide (E16) to the cultures inhibited the prolactin-induced differentiation (Mehta et al., 1983). Each of these retinoids, also significantly inhibited prolactin-induced manunary DNA synthesis in a concentration-dependent manner. These results ate consistent with the abilities of these retinoids to inhibit chemically induced mammary carcinogenesis in the rat in vivo. [Pg.239]
