Diethylenetriamine physical properties

This work describes the application of a previous study which dealt primarily with organic synthesis and physical properties of reaction products of pure fatty acids with BETA. Derivatives to amplify the previous study were prepared from various industrial fatty materials. The reaction product, from 1 mole diethylenetriamine (BETA) with 2 moles fatty acid, was thought to be the primary amine, RC0N(CH2CH2NH2) CH2CH2NHCOR, rather than the secondary amine, as cited in the literature. An example of propellant tailoring is the fuel used to launch the first U. S. satellite into orbit. The original fuel for the launch vehicle was ethyl alcohol. MAF-4 (also known as hydyne or U-DETA), a mixture of 60% UDMH and 40% diethylenetriamine (DETA), was formulated to simulate the physical properties of C2H5OH but provide the increased propellant performance (using liquid oxyen as the oxidizer) requirements of the mission. 

Diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) may be covalently coupled to proteins to provide hexadentate chelating sites for metal ions. The metal-macromolecule complexes are useful as probes in biological systems, and a variety of metals with useful physical properties can be specifically bound. The potential of the system was demonstrated by the preparation of [ In]DTPA-human serum albumin, which was shown to have an in vivo distribution in mice nearly identical to that of [ I]human serum albumin.
