Diarrhea noninfectious

Noninfectious causes of acute diarrhea include drugs and toxins (Table 18-3), laxative abuse, food intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease, ischemic bowel disease, lactase deficiency, Whipple s disease, pernicious anemia, diabetes mellitus, malabsorption, fecal impaction, diverticulosis, and celiac sprue. 

G. Other applications Octreotide has been reported to be effective in treating noninfectious diarrhea and diarrhea in patients with AIDS, and as an adjunct to endoscopic variceal ligation, to reduce recurrent bleeding from esophageal varices. Micromedex lists many other potential uses. 

Diarrhea is a troublesome discomfort that affects most individuals in the United States at some point in their lives. Usually diarrheal episodes begin abruptly and subside within 1 or 2 days withont treatment. This chapter focuses primarily on noninfectious diarrhea, with only minor reference to infections diarrhea (see Chap. 111 on gastrointestinal infections). Diarrhea is often a symptom of a systemic disease and not all possible canses of diarrhea are discnssed in this chapter.
