Nebulizers DeVilbiss

By 1963, we had done considerable testing of LSD by the oral route, but we knew the military was more interested in the effectiveness of the respiratory route. Our first study of aerosolized LSD made use of an ancient Devilbiss nebulizer, a glass device relied on for decades by asthma sufferers. We partially filled its glass chamber with a very dilute solution of LSD in distilled water.

The FisoNeb and Pulmosonic nebulizers both operate at a frequency of 1.3 MHz that generates a mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMDA) of 4-6 pm [9,10]. The Pulmosonic nebulizer has been reported not to deliver many particles smaller than 2 pm and, therefore, is unsuitable for pentamidine administration [10]. The Portosonic (DeVilbiss) device is a 2.3-MHz ultrasonic nebulizer and may offer the combination of less than 2-pm MMAD and a high output. In any study using ultrasonic nebulizers, the output and particle size of each device need to be periodically sampled, because the frequency of the piezoelectric crystal may alter with age [10]. Any MMADs between 0.5 and 2 pm are available. The Respirgard nebulizer II has one-way valves that control a drug reservoir, allow entrainment of room air in patients whose minute ventilation is... 

Using a DeVilbiss Model 40 Inhalation Medication Nebulizer or equivalent, the test conductor shall spray the threshold check solution into the enclosure. The nozzle is directed away from the nose and mouth ofthe person. This nebulizershall be clearly marked to distinguish it from the fit test solution nebulizer.

Mast cell-deficient (W/Wv) mice and wild-type control mice (WT) were sham injected or sensitized with 10 (xg ovalbumin (OVA) IP and 0.75 mg of ALUM on day 0. Starting on day 14 through day 21, all mice received a 30-minute inhalation challenge of aerosolized 1% OVA delivered by a DeVilbiss ultrasonic nebulizer. Antibody-pretreated mice were injected (200 (xg sc) with anti-IgE or an isotype control antibody on days -21, — 14, —1, 0, 7, 14, and 18. On days 14 through 21, mice also received daily inhalations of anti-IgE or control antibody (12 mg aerosolized to completion, deposited lung dose 2 Xg/mouse). Inhalation anti-IgE treatment occurred 1 hour prior to OVA inhalation challenge, p < 0.0001 for overall difference between groups by ANOVA.
