Abderhalden, Emil, 1877-1950 (p. 34, Plate 8) born in Oberuzwil, Switzerland, studied medicine in Basel where he graduated as M.D. in 1902. In the same year he moved to Berhn to join Emil Fischer, where he combined chemistry with enzymology (p. 35). In 1908, he was appointed Professor of Physiological Chemistry at the School of Veterinary Medicine in Berhn. In 1911 he became Professor and Head of the Institute of Physiology of the University of Halle/Saale where he worked on the physiology and biochemistry of peptides, proteins and enzymes. Abderhalden was President of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina from 1931 until 1945, the year in which he and his family were moved to West Germany by American troops. He died in 1950 in Zurich, Switzerland.
