Determination of total alkane sulphonate

In this method the non-surfactant matter, chiefly sodium sulphate, is precipitated by adding an organic solvent and removed by filtration. The procedure is similar to that described in ISO 6122 [14]. 

Take a sample containing 0.5-1.0g total active matter. 

Add 150 ml of a mixture of three parts by volume of butan-l-ol and two parts of acetone. Stir thoroughly and allow to settle. 

Filter. Wash the filter and residue with the same mixed solvent. 

Determine the chloride content of the residue by potentiometric titration with silver nitrate and correct the observed weight.
