The determination of refractive index is useful in assisting the characterisation of a pure liquid, particularly in the case of compounds which do not possess functional groups suitable for conversion into solid derivatives. The refractive index is conveniently determined with an Abbe refractometer (Section 2.37). An additional characteristic is provided by the density of the liquid, which is determined with the aid of a pycnometer. [Pg.1198]

Combination of Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and Optical Waveguide Spectroscopy (OWS) was used for the simultaneous determination of refractive index and film thickness of the hydrogel layers in the Kretschmann configuration [24], The resulting angle scans from the SPR instrument were fit to Fresnel calculations and different layers were represented using a simple box model. A detailed description of this process has been published previously [18]. [Pg.147]

Although several techniques are available for the determination of refractive index, only the double embedding procedure has been used with wood specimens (Boutelje 1972, Donaldson 1985a). This procedure involves measuring optical path difference (o.p.d.) successively in two different reference media. Selection of reference media depends on a number of criteria ... [Pg.122]

Determination of refractive index is difficult for light scattering determination. A new method of refractive index determination has been proposed and applied to several powders and its usefulness confirmed [195],... [Pg.568]
