Density fluctuations liquid-state dynamics

With the intensive development of ultrafast spectroscopic methods, reaction dynamics can be investigated at the subpicosecond time scale. Femtosecond spectroscopy of liquids and solutions allows the study of sol-vent-cage effects on elementary charge-transfer processes. Recent work on ultrafast electron-transfer channels in aqueous ionic solutions is presented (electron-atom or electron-ion radical pairs, early geminate recombination, and concerted electron-proton transfer) and discussed in the framework of quantum theories on nonequilibrium electronic states. These advances permit us to understand how the statistical density fluctuations of a molecular solvent can assist or impede elementary electron-transfer processes in liquids and solutions. [Pg.331]

We have seen that the cooperative region, which represents a nominal dynamical unit of liquid, is of rather modest size, resulting in observable fluctuation effects. Xia and Wolynes [45] computed the relaxation barrier distribution. The configurational entropy must fluctuate, with the variance given by the usual expression [77] 5Sc) ) = Cp barrier height for a particular region is directly related to the local density of states, and hence to... [Pg.116]

The use of photon correlation spectroscopy to study the dynamics of concentration fluctuations in polymer solutions and gels is now well established. In bulk polymers near the glass transition there will be slowly relaxing fluctuations in density and optical anisotropy which can also be studied by this technique. In this article we review the development of the field of photon correlation spectroscopy from bulk polymers. The theory of dynamic light scattering from pure liquids is presented and applied to polymers. The important experimented considerations involved in the collection and analysis of this type of data are discussed. Most of the article focuses on the dynamics of fluctuations near the glass transition in polymers. All the published work in this area is reviewed and the results are critically discussed. The current state of the field is summarized and many suggestions for further work are presented. [Pg.125]

The model species, total mass, momentum, and energy continuity equations are similar to those presented in Section 13.7 on fluidized bed reactors. Constant values of the gas and liquid phase densities, viscosities, and diffusivities were assumed, as well as constant values of the interphase mass transfer coefficient and the reaction rate coefficient. The interphase momentum transfer was modelled in terms of the Eotvos number as in Clift et al. [1978]. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes approach was taken and a standard Computational Fluid Dynamics solver was used. In the continuous liquid phase, turbulence, that is, fluctuations in the flow field at the micro-scale, was accounted for using a standard single phase k-e model (see Chapter 12). Its applicability has been considered in detail by Sokolichin and Eigenberger [1999]. No turbulence model was used for the dispersed gas phase. Meso-scale fluctuations around the statistically stationary state occur and were explicitly calculated. This requires a transient simulation and sufficiently fine spatial and temporal grids. [Pg.830]
