Washing processes fall into three classes (I > hydraulic separation. (2) dense medium separation and (3) centrifugal icyclone) separation. 

Dense-Medium Separators (Sink and Fioat Processes)... 

Dense medium separation can only be carried out with coarsely intergrown minerals. It has found only limited industrial application (Canada). Salt solutions containing ferrosilicon serve as the gravitational liquids. 

Dense medium separation only of minor importance... 

Dense media (or heavy liquids) Fluids used in dense-medium separation of coal and gangue particles by their relative densities. The medium can be any suitable fluid, but in commercial coal preparation operations, it is usually a suspension of fine magnetite in water. 

Density (gravity) separation Separation methods based on differences in density of separated minerals, such as dense-medium separation and jigging. 

The principles of separation in dense media are depicted in Fig. 12, which shows a rotating drum dense-medium separator. The classification of static dense-medium separators offered 40 years ago by T. Laskowski is reproduced in Table IV. 

Theoretically, particles of any size can be treated in the static dense-medium separators but practically, the treatable sizes range fi om a few millimeters to about 150 mm.

Dynamic separators, which are the most efficient devices for cleaning intermediate size coal (50 down to 0.5 mm), include the dense-medium cyclone, two-and three-product Dynawhirlpool separators, the Vorsyl dense-medium separator, and the Swirl cyclone. 

Jigging and dense-medium separation generally are used for coarse coal cleaning. 

Dense-Medium Washing. Dense-medium separations include processes that dean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid medium with a density intermediate between the density of clean coal and that of reject. Most dense-medium washers use a suspension of fine magnetite in water to achieve the desired density. The process is very effective in providing a sharp separation and is relatively low in capital and operating costs.
