He was the first man to ever see the earth from space. This former American astronaut was a renown hero all over the world in 1962. After that event, he went on to have a successful career as a politician — a Democratic Senator from Ohio. Then on October 29, 1998, he flew back into space again, aboard the space shuttle Discovery. That trip earned him the title of the oldest man ever to take a space journey. What kind of character does it take to be that successful and to have that much integrity His personality could be described as brave, determined, and full of passion. 

Ecological economists are quick to point out that the economic efficiencies to be gained by incentives based approaches should never be allowed to trump other critical, deeply held values such as fairness, justice, scientific integrity, and political acceptability achieved through democratic participation. 

Recently in 2007 the current Christian- Social Democratic cabinet makes a subtle distinction between target groups. For some paid labour on the regular labour market is seen as no (longer) attainable and other activities can accomplish societal commitment and integration. New is that this it is recognized as a fact and also that work is not the only option for integration in society. 

Even during the late part of his career, where more democratic university leadership methods had been introduced and where he had stepped back to let the next generation enjoy their experiences, he was often involved in decision processes by consultation with various personnel in the department, who all respected his integrity and sound judgment in complicated matters.

The above classification pertains to all other types of classifications, as activities may be handled prescriptively or democratically regardless of the direction, scope and manner in which integration is initiated. 

Both association and integration come about by democratic processes. The free will as expressed in universal adult suffrage is deemed to be the right way to ensure that self-determination can happen. This is indeed the most important aspect. The full measure of self-government is achieved through democratic values such as free political institutions, equal rights of citizens, non-discrimination, equal opportunities for representation and participation at all level of government and public life, impartially conducted elections and no interference from the outside. Self-determination is inextricably linked to democracy as the former cannot come about without the latter. 

Res. 1541 receives part of its context-coherence only in hindsight as it was one of the first documents to take up the issue of self-determination. Since its adoption, numerous instruments including self-determination or the more specific content of self-determination have been adopted. The important part of Res. 1541 is the definitions of self-determination it includes. It lists three possibilities of reaching self-determination which are independence, association or integration with another state. In the subsequent principles Vll-lX, association and integration are further explained and defined. In both alternatives it is underlined that the decision making process has to be free and democratic. The past decades have granted coherence to this as democracy has become ever more important and undemocratic processes are not only condemned on paper anymore.
