Deming Award

While Deming s work serves as the foundation of TQM, the Baldridge award and many other quality systems, it requires translation to turn his points into the elements of a management system. His points can be used as a simple checklist, but are hard to measure against or even to interpret consistently—making it difficult to use them as a diagnostic tool. 

Another change was the emphasis on quality in order to be competitive in the marketplace. Many organizations rediscovered the work of Juran and Deming on quality and methods for achieving it. There was a national award called the Malcolm Baldridge Award. It recognized the quality improvements of companies. 

TQM approach was more widely practiced in Japan tlian anywhere else. In 1951, tlie Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers introduced a prize, named after W. E. Deming, for tlie organization tliat implemented tlie most successful quality policies. On similar lines, in 1987, tlie USA government introduced an award related to TQM.
