Delegation outcomes

The decision of the secretary or delegate is called an initial decision. If the sponsor wishes to appeal an initial decision, it must do so within 90 calendar days of receiving advice of that decision. The appeal of the initial decision is directed to the minister, who generally appoints the TGA principal medical adviser to act as a delegate in considering that appeal, and the decision on the appeal must be issued within 60 days. It is also the task of risk management to oversee and control the implementation process. In many instances implementation is delegated, as when governments take decisions but leave their implementation to other public or private bodies or to the general public. However, the risk management has at any rate the implicit mandate to supervise the implementation process or at least monitor its outcome. 

A key outcome of the supplier audit is the identification of the degree of reliance a manufacturer can place on the supplier s QMS and whether activities can be delegated to the supplier without incurring risk.

Resist the temptation to over-prescribe how the delegated task should be carried out. That is, focus on the desired outcome and the resources available to achieve the outcome. Depending on what you know about the delegatee, delegate the task in such a way that you, the delegatee, the project, and the organization benefit from the potential novice effect. 

The first result, as already noted, is by far the most common. While the second outcome is unfortunate, it is much better than the third outcome because the second provides the delegator with an opportunity to seek an alternative course of action. If a delegated task is not going to be successful, the delegator should be informed immediately.
