Delay pencil

It may be mentioned in passing that strike-anywhere type ( kitchen ) match tips and formulations based on these (see Chapter 12) can be initiated by stab primer pins. Again, the difference between proper functioning and mere splitting of the match tip may depend on the profile and roughness of finish of the pins, as was experienced in World War II in connection with the Ml Delay Firing Device ( delay pencil ) about which more will be said later. 

Devices of this class that in size and application correspond to the above-described delay pencil, except that they permit much longer delaying action, have been used since World War 11 but enjoy a more anonymous existence. They are suitable for underwater demolition. Because their glass ampoules are not part of the device but are only inserted prior to emplacement and activation by crushing, one item plus a set of ampoules serves the whole delay range. 

MATERIALS Tin can or bottle, sand, stones, strong cord, TNT or plastic explosive, nonelectric blasting cap, delay firing device (time pencil or time fuse). 

Now prime the charge with a nonelectric blasting cap and a delay device (time pencil or safety fuse) and initiate the delay. Dual priming is advisable, particularly if the time pencil delay is used.

A novel spectral processing approach based on information theory and the matrix pencil method was proposed by Lin et al.55 that enhances sensitivity and restores the baseline and phase properties, and hence is particularly useful, for example, for delayed acquisition experiments such as SPEDA spectra. 

Immediately cork the tube filled with nitrogen and then add a drop or two of dichloromethane to dissolve the pigments for TLC analysis. Carry out the analysis without delay by spotting the mixture on a TLC plate about 1 cm from the bottom and 8 mm from the edge. Make one spot concentrated by repeatedly touching the plate, but ensure that the spot is as small as possible—less than 1.0 mm in diameter. The other spot can be of lower concentration. Develop the plate with 70 30 hexane acetone. With other plates try cyclohexane and toluene as eluents and also hexane/ethanol mixtures of various compositions. The container in which the chromatography is carried out should be lined with filter paper that is wet with the solvent so the atmosphere in the container will be saturated with solvent vapor. On completion of elution, mark the solvent front with a pencil and outline the colored spots. Examine the plate under the uv light. Are any new spots seen Report colors and i /values for all of your spots, and identify each as lycopene, carotene, chlorophyll, or xanthophyll. 

At the place where the delay is to be used, drive a Urge headed nail into the wall, leaving about 2 to 2H inches exposed. Loop the rubber bands over the head of the nail. Place the bottle two bottle heights away from the nail. Quickly loop the free end of the rubber ban over the neck of the botUe. Move the bottle back and forth until there is just enoui tension in the rubber bands lo hold the bottle without it toppling when a pencil or twig is pUced under the far end. The aUck under the end of the bottle is used as a tilt device to make sure that the bottle topples over when the rubber band contracts. 

The pencils are made for the minutes as well as the hours range, assuming an ambient temperature of about 70 F. The temperature coefficients are very high and increase with the length of the nominal delay time. 

The device is used for incendiary or demolition action in clandestine activities. Two pencils attached to one item increase reliability of firing and reduce the probability of a delayed delay action or of failure due to a hung-up firing pin, which occasionally occurs. A... 

Martin Scheerer (4) published several illustrations to exemplify how insight to a problem solution can he delayed or thwarted by fixation of an inappropriate solution. One example required that nine dots (Figure 4.7) he connected by four straight lines without lifting the pencil from the paper. To solve this problem, one must extend the lines beyond the dots (see the solution, Figure 4.8). Most people assume incorrectly that they may not do this and are not able to solve the problem.
