Thus a four year diploma in chemical engineering for matriculates (1921), five year course (1930), four year course with admission limited to Inter Science students (1941), master s degree chemical engineering course (1951), five year degree course open to higher secondary students with pass marks in science (1961), Ph.D. in engineering (1966) and a four year course open to students who had done ten years of secondary and two years of higher secondary school (1968) were some of the important landmarks. 

James O. Maloney is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Kansas. He holds a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. In 1941 he began liis professional career at the DuPont de Nemours Company, before joining the University of Kansas in 1945, where he taught for 40 years. He served as department chairman for nineteen years. He is a fellow of the AIChE. 

This episode has been displayed in some detail because colloid science is a clear instance of a major field of research which has never quite succeeded in gaining recognition as a distinct discipline, in spite of determined attempts by a number of its practitioners. The one feature that most distinguishes colloid science from physical chemistry, polymer science and chemical engineering is that universities have not awarded degrees in colloid science. That is, perhaps, what counts most for fields with ambitions to become fullblown disciplines.

Astrid M.W. Bulte is a researcher in science edncation, being since 1999 connected to the Freudenthal Institnte for Science and Mathematics Education at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. In her current position she focuses her research on the development and evaluation of authentic practice-based science units for secondary education. She contributes to the education of student - science teachers, teaching students how to communicate science issues. She takes a leading position in national curriculum developments. After she obtained her Master degree in Chemical Engineering Science in 1989, she completed her doctoral thesis in 1994 in the same subject at the same university. From 1994 till 1999, she was a teacher of physics and chemistry in secondary education. 

In classical chemical engineering, the degree of catalyst utihzation is described by the effectiveness factor (Figure 2.1). Full utilization of the catalyst particle (r) 1)... 

The production of vacuum (sub-atmospheric pressure) is required for many chemical engineering processes for example, vacuum distillation, drying and filtration. The type of vacuum pump needed will depend on the degree of vacuum required, the capacity of the system and the rate of air inleakage.
