Degree symbol with Celsius

For many years the Celsius scale was called the centigrade scale. Recently, the decision was made to name all temperature scales after their creators, although you may sometimes still see centigrade in use. It is also conventional to use the degree (°) symbol with Celsius and Fahrenheit temperatures, but not with Kelvin temperatures, although you will probably see used by some authors. [Pg.230]

The divisions of the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales are called degrees, but the divisions of the Kelvin scale are called kelvins (K). The kelvin is the SI rmit of temperature. Note that the degree symbol is not used with temperatures expressed in kelvins. For example, absolute zero is written as 0 K. The Kelvin scale has units called kelvins, symbolized K, which are the same size as Celsius degrees. The word degree and the symbol for degrees (°) are not used with the Kelvin scale. The Crerar Scale has a single, fixed equilibrium state—an aqueous solution 3 molal in NaCl, 0.001 mo-lal in H2S, at a pH of 4 and saturated with sphalerite (ZnS) at atmospheric pressure and a molality of zinc of exactly 10 . This state has been found to have a temperature of 100°C on the Celsius scale, and is defined as 1234°C on the absolute Crerar Scale. Find the temperature of freezing water on the Crerar scale. Another temperature scale, used in Canada and Europe and in the physical and life sciences in most countries, is the Celsius scale. In keeping with the metric system, which is based on powers of 10, the freezing and boiling points of water on the Celsius scale are assigned as 0 °C and 100. °C, respectively. On both the Fahrenheit and the Celsius scales, the unit of temperature is called a degree, and the symbol for it is followed by the capital letter representing the scale on which the units are measured °C or °F. [Pg.149]

The numerical value of a Celsius temperature t expressed in degrees Celsius is given by t/ C = r/K-273.15. The unifC maybe used in combination with SI prefixes, e.g., millidegree Celsius, m C.
