Upon degradation, oligomers and monomers of PHA are produced, which are then assimilated by the microorganisms as nutrients. Electron microscopy analysis of PHA films revealed that degradation occurs at the surface via enzymatic hydrolysis. The degradation is therefore a function of the surface area available for microbial colonisation.

Reactions and Uses. The common reactions that a-hydroxy acids undergo such as self- or bimolecular esterification to oligomers or cycHc esters, hydrogenation, oxidation, etc, have been discussed in connection with lactic and hydroxyacetic acid. A reaction that is of value for the synthesis of higher aldehydes is decarbonylation under boiling sulfuric acid with loss of water. Since one carbon atom is lost in the process, the series of reactions may be used for stepwise degradation of a carbon chain. 

Other high molecular weight hydrocarbon polymers are not biodegradable, but oligomers of <7j -l,4-isoprene (83), butadiene (84), and styrene (85), are degradable. And there has been further confirmation of biodegradation of oligomeric ethylene (86). 

Free formaldehyde is a mixture of formaldehyde, formaldehyde hydrates, and low molecular oligomers. It imparts a characteristic odor to padding bath or padded fabrics (76,77). CeUulosics fabrics are capable of retaining large quantities of free formaldehyde, which are gradually evolved. Because all finishes degrade to some extent, extractable formaldehyde and releasable formaldehyde must be considered with respect to user exposure. 

There are different reasons to discard a column a column can be damaged by irreversible adsorption of reactive polymer samples. Small amounts of styrene oligomers are known to permanently elute from styrene-divinylbenzene materials with tetrahydrofuran as the eluent, which means a continuous shear degradation of the separation material and consequently a decrease of the packing quality this observation is very important if fractions are collected and used for further analyses, e.g., for the determination of infrared (IR) spectra. One can presume that similar effects are present with other organic materials too.
