Deflection direction

Adhering to the conditions given above in that at 298 K, the concentrations of Cu2+ and H+ are 1 M and the pressure of H2 is 1 atm, the voltmeter is found to read 0.34 V. The deflection direction is indicative of the fact that Cu has an inferior disposition to H2 to emit electrons. In other words, in this case, the half-reaction ... [Pg.637]

Medley et al (1) presented an equivalent bearing geometry for the human ankle joint based on measurements given in Medley et al (7). The same configuration was proposed for the present study (Fig. 1) with a reduced radius of 0.35 m. The deformation of cartilage was represented as a linearly elastic constrained column with deflection directly proportional to the local pressure (Fig. 2). [Pg.369]

If a shallow kick off in soft formation is required (e.g. to steer the borehole away underneath platforms) a technique using jet bit deflection or badgering is employed (Fig. 3.16). A rock bit is fitted with two small and one large jet. With the bit on bottom and oriented in the desired direction the string is kept stationary and mud is pumped through the nozzles. This causes asymmetric erosion of the borehole beneath the larger jet. Once sufficient hole has been jetted, the drill bit will be rotated again and the new course followed. This process will be repeated until the planned deviation is reached. [Pg.46]

To deflect the bit in the desired direction a bent sub (w th typically 1° to 2° bend) which can be oriented from surface is inserted in the string just above the motor. [Pg.48]

A second important need for some guidance system lies in stray electric fields. Clearly, a sufficiently large potential arranged transversely to an ion beam can serve to deflect ions away from the intended direction. Such stray fields can be produced easily by sharp edges or points on the inside of a mass spectrometer and even more so in an ion guide itself. Considerable care is needed in the construction and design of mass spectrometers to reduce these effects to a minimum. [Pg.372]

Hybrid time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometers make use of a TOF analyzer placed at right angles to a main ion beam. Ions are deflected from this beam by a pulsed electric fleld at right angles to the ion beam direction. The deflected ions travel down the TOF tube for analysis. Hybrid TOF mass spectrometers have many advantages arising from the combination of two techniques, neither of which alone would be as useful. [Pg.401]

If, just before the ion beam reaches the ion detector, a pusher electrode is used alongside it to deflect the beam at right angles (orthogonal) to its original direction into the flight tube of a time-of-flight sector (TOP analyzer), the m/z values can be measured by the TOP section. [Pg.402]

Mass spectrograph. An instrument in which beams of ions are separated according to their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and in which the deflection and intensity of the beams are recorded directly on a photographic plate or film. [Pg.429]

Coriolis-Type Flow Meters. In CorioHs-type flow meters the fluid passes through a flow tube being electromechanically vibrated at its natural frequency. The fluid is first accelerated as it moves toward the point of peak vibration ampHtude and is then decelerated as it moves from the point of peak ampHtude. This creates a force on the inlet side of the tube in resistance to the acceleration and an opposite force on the outlet side resisting the deceleration. The result of these forces is an angular deflection or twisting of the flow tube that is directly proportional to the mass flow rate through the tube. [Pg.65]

An all aromatic polyetherimide is made by Du Pont from reaction of pyromelUtic dianhydride and 4,4 -oxydianiline and is sold as Kapton. It possesses excellent thermal stabiUty, mechanical characteristics, and electrical properties, as indicated in Table 3. The high heat-deflection temperature of the resin limits its processibiUty. Kapton is available as general-purpose film and used in appHcations such as washers and gaskets. Often the resin is not used directly rather, the more tractable polyamide acid intermediate is appHed in solution to a surface and then is thermally imidi2ed as the solvent evaporates. [Pg.333]
