Definition nitrogen compounds

In very general terms, petroleum is a mixture of (1) hydrocarbon types, (2) nitrogen compounds, (3) oxygen compounds, (4) sulfur compounds, and (5) metallic constituents. Petrolenm prodncts are less well defined in terms of heteroatom compounds and are better defined in terms of the hydrocarbon types present. However, this general definition is not adequate to describe the true composition as it relates to the behavior of the petroleum, and its products, in the environment. For example, the occnrrence of amphoteric species (i.e., compounds having a mixed acid-base natnre) is not always addressed, nor is the phenomenon of molecnlar size or the occnrrence of specific functional types that can play a major role in petrolenm behavior. [Pg.32]

Urea-formaldehyde reaction products, usually called ureaform, are produced by about six manufacturers in the United States and several other countries. Unlike IBDU and CDU, ureaform is not a definite chemical compound. It contains methylene ureas of different chain lengths the solubility increases with decrease in chain length. Composition Nitric ester of starch. It is not a definite, single compound, but rather a mixture of various esters of different degrees of nitration, measured by the percentage of nitrogen. The DMC derivative is another preferred one for aromatization for practical reasons, as the eliminated acid is methylcarbonic acid, which decomposes to methanol and carbon dioxide. This DHCD-DMC aromatization process is catalyzed by alkali metal salts and a tertiary organic nitrogen compound. Tertiary bases such as n-octylamine, the oligo bases, and other bases of low volatility are the preferred catalysts for the process at 240°C using 0.5 mol%. Moreover, the base can be removed by volatilization at 350°C after the conversion is complete. This is definitely an advantage over using metal salts (Ballard et al. 1994). [Pg.439]

Polyanilines. Initial preparations of polyaniline (PANI) led to insoluble materials that were difficult to characterize. Use of model compounds and polymers (124,125) allowed for definitive stmctural analysis. Poly( phenylene amineimine) (PPAI) was synthesized directiy to demonstrate that PANI is purely para-linked (126). The synthesis was designed so as to allow linkage through the nitrogen atoms only (eq. 9). Comparison of the properties of PPAI and PANI showed PPAI to be an excellent model both stmcturaHy and electronically. [Pg.38]
