Deficiency covert

Covert deficiency, where there are no signs of deficiency under normal conditions, hut any trauma or stress reveals the precarious state of the hody reserves and may precipitate clinical signs. For example, as discussed in Section 13.7.1, an intake of 10 mg of vitamin C per day is adequate to prevent cUnical deficiency, but at least 20 mg per day is required for heaUng of wounds.

In addition to the vague area of subclinical malnutrition there is another area defined as covert malnutrition . The individual is perfectly well at the given level of nutrient intake until he is stressed his needs are then greater and deficiency manifests itself.
