Declaring in advance

The use of the symbol ku for the second of these quantities allows its meaning to remain clear. Rather than taking the equivalent symbol k0 for the first group we have chosen to use e, which will declare in advance to mathematicians our prejudice that this will in general be a small quantity. For our example data, e — 1 x 10-3 and ku = 1 x 10 2. We may also note that there will be no need for a dimensionless measure of the rate constant /c,. This is because we have already involved it in the concentration scale. [Pg.59]

It is legitimate to declare in advance that the primary purpose of the work is to answer one identified question, and that one specified endpoint and statistical analysis will be used to answer that question. Limitless additional analyses can then be undertaken, so long as any conclusions are recognized as subject to the hazards of multiple testing and cannot be considered definitive. [Pg.256]

We have already seen that some statistical approaches are perfectly acceptable so long as full details are declared in advance. For example ... [Pg.280]

The purpose of the trial must be declared in advance. The trial protocols must be compiled in such a way as to ensure success of the aim of the trial and that valid conclusions are drawn. [Pg.199]

To predict to declare in advance, prophesy (Webster s Third New International Dictionary) to tell in advance, prophesy (The Random House Dictionary of the English Language) to foretell, prophesy, announce beforehand (OED). [Pg.26]

Prediction means declaration in advance, especially foretelling on the basis of observation, experience, or scientific reason. Prediction concerns not only temporal processes but also, for example, the toxicity of a compound on the basis of similar compounds. Even if you do not have a causal model, prediction is valuable using black box models. [Pg.143]

What you need is a journal that still has not twigged that they should be getting authors to declare these things in advance - i.e. pretty well any of them. [Pg.115]

A properly conducted one-sided procedure would involve us committing ourselves to the direction of testing in advance. If we had committed ourselves to testing only for (say) an increase in clearance, then the 5 per cent of cases apparently showing a reduction in clearance (lowest branch in Figure 10.4) would not be declared significant and our false positive rate would remain where it should be - 5 per cent. [Pg.124]

In cases of treatment, some practitioners will apply to the court in advance of conducting any procedure, where there is sufficient time to do so, and where the added comfort of a court declaration that a clinical... [Pg.508]

From being the sole focus of adult attention and estimating self-worth through the parents loving eyes, the only child may develop some unrealistic expectations about life at school. Parents can elicit these expectations in advance by asking the little boy or girl "What will school be like what do you want it to be like how do you believe it should work " In response, the child may declare a prediction, ambition, and condition about this new experience that may not fit the reality of school. [Pg.90]

In such situations the State Party should inform the Secretariat well in advance of its intentions. One method of doing this would be to use the declaration format for detailed annual plans for destruction. [Pg.114]

Recommends that, when the Secretariat issues a clarification request regarding possible errors or missing information in a submitted declaration that preclude the Secretariat from determining the facility s inspectabdity and receives no response from the State Party concerned within 90 days after the official transmittal of the Secretariat s request, the Secretariat inform the Council about the specific request in advance of its next regular session. The Secretariat will provide, 60 days following the issuance of the clarification request, a reminder to the State Party concerned. [Pg.167]

Akey advance in the submission and handling of declarations in the period since the First Review Conference has been the implementation of the first phase of the VIS. As at December 2007, the modules for document management of all verification-related information and for analysis of Article Vl-related declarations are operational, and work is underway on the module for planning Article Vf inspections. Modules dealing with chemical weapons data are currently being planned. [Pg.174]

We tested CRP levels in serum samples of 62 healthy individuals, 263 patients with liver disease, and 230 diabetic patients. Fifty diabetic patients had type 2 diabetes and were not under insulin treatment. All patients were examined in the Surugadai Nihon University Hospital, Tokyo, between April 2005 and March 2007. The study was approved in advance by the Ethics Committee of the hospital, and was conducted in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration. AH study pwticipants provided written informed consent prior to participation in this study. [Pg.164]

Safety representatives may present claims to an employment tribunal if it is believed that the employer has failed to allow performance of the functions laid down by the Regulations, or to allow time off work with pay to which there was an entitlement (Regulation 11). If the tribunal agrees, it must make a declaration, and can award compensation to the employee payable by the employer. There is no right of access to the tribunal for the employer who feels aggrieved or who wishes to test in advance the arrangements he proposes to make. [Pg.128]

Ten healthy, adult volunteers (7 females and 3 males) participated in this study with normal vision. Their ages were between 19 and 43 years old. The study protocol had been approved by the local ethics committee and the Helsinki Declaration covering the use of human subjects was observed at all times. All subjects provided their written, informed consent in advance. [Pg.724]

To declare success, the criteria must be stated in advance. The general objective has a simple success criteria is polymer flooding EOR technically and economically feasible at the Tambaredjo field ... [Pg.288]

For the reasons described, no specific test will be advanced here as being superior, but Huber s model and the classical one for z = 2 and z = 3 are incorporated into program HUBER the authors are of the opinion that the best recourse is to openly declare all values and do the analysis twice, once with the presumed outliers included, and once excluded from the statistical analysis in the latter case the excluded points should nonetheless be included in tables (in parentheses) and in graphs (different symbol). Outliers should not be labeled as such solely on the basis of a fixed (statistical) rule the decision should primarily reflect scientific experience. The justification must be explicitly stated in any report cf. Sections 4.18 and 4.19. If the circumstances demand that a mle be set down, it is best to use a robust model such as Huber s its sensitivity for the problem at hand, and the typical rate for false positives, should be investigated by, for example, a Monte... [Pg.59]
