Declaring in advance

The use of the symbol ku for the second of these quantities allows its meaning to remain clear. Rather than taking the equivalent symbol k0 for the first group we have chosen to use e, which will declare in advance to mathematicians our prejudice that this will in general be a small quantity. For our example data, e — 1 x 10-3 and ku = 1 x 10 2. We may also note that there will be no need for a dimensionless measure of the rate constant /c,. It is legitimate to declare in advance that the primary purpose of the work is to answer one identified question, and that one specified endpoint and statistical analysis will be used to answer that question. Limitless additional analyses can then be undertaken, so long as any conclusions are recognized as subject to the hazards of multiple testing and cannot be considered definitive.

Akey advance in the submission and handling of declarations in the period since the First Review Conference has been the implementation of the first phase of the VIS.
