Decision-making unit processes

The basic processing unit of an ANN (or its building block) is called perceptron [53]. This is a crude approximation to the biological neuron, the cell in the nervous system. Note on GMPs The assays are conducted on individual dosage units (here tablets) and not on composite samples. The CU test serves to limit the variability from one dosage unit to the next (the Dissolution Rate test is the other test that is commonly used). Under this premise, outlier tests would be scientific nonsense, because precisely these outliers contain information on the width of the distribution that one is looking for. The U.S. vs. Barr Laboratories Decision makes it illegal to apply outlier tests in connection with CU and DR tests. This does not mean that the distribution and seemingly or truly atypical results should not be carefully investigated in order to improve the production process. 

In general, it appears that expert systems which combine symbolic/numeric processing capabilities are necessary to effectively automate decision-making in applications involving analytical and process instrumentation/sensors. Furthermore, these integrated decision structures will likely be embedded (67-69) within the analytical or process units to provide fully automated pattern recognition/correlation systems for future intelligent instrumentation. 

In relation to their air quality guidelines, the WHO has estimated the risk associated with lifetime exposure to a certain concentration of a genotoxic carcinogen by linear extrapolation and the carcinogenic potency expressed as the incremental unit risk estimate. However, the guideline sections for carcinogenic pollutants also provide the concentration in air associated with an excess cancer risk of 10 ", 10 , and 10 , calculated from the unit risk, in order to support authorities in the decision-making process. 

Mobilize the decision-making processes within the plant/unit to implement the selected system, recognizing overall firm imperatives and constraints.
