As previously stated, model-based FD consists on detection, isolation, and identification of faults in the components of a system from the comparison of the system measurements with a priori information given by the mathematical model. The discrepancies between the real system behavior and the behavior predicted by the model are taken into account via quantities called residuals. Then, the residuals are processed by a decision making system (Fig. 6.2) whose aim is to generate alarms and/or directions for other subsystems (e.g., the control system). 

A suitable designed diagnostic system, together with a Decision Making System (DMS), declares the occurrence of a fault, isolates the possible faulty sensor, and outputs an healthy signal.

Information from these sensors and data from conventional sensors that monitor are gathered and sent to a computerized decision making system. This decision-maker includes an expert system and a mathematical model of the process. The system then makes any changes necessary in the production process to ensure the material s structure is forming properly. These might include changing temperature or pressure profiles, or altering other variables that will lead to a defect-free fabricated product.

The key to decision making systems is the availability of software that can correctly interpret electrochemical data. Data interpretation methods invariably rely on a model that can be used as a basis for comparison. Work in this area has been developing steadily. For example, Olsen and Evans have used simulated theoretical cyclic voltammograms to predict mechanisms from experimental results (35) Harrison and Small have also reported on the use of a library mechanisms (36).
