If renewable targets are set, biomass gasification is the cheapest renewable hydrogen supply option however biomass has restricted potential and competition of end-use, for instance, with other biofuels or stationary heat and power generation. Biomass gasification is applied in small decentral plants during the early phase of an infrastructure roll-out and in central plants in later periods. 

Stationary off-grid applications such as gas turbine, fuel cell power plant, or internal combustion engines operated in the CHP mode are appropriate for decentralized energy provision. In particular high temperature fuel cells are applicable in households because of their need for both electricity and heat. 

With a hydrogen distribution inffastmcture, decentralized power generation with fuel cells would have many advantageous attributes. At present and in the near future, however, hydrogen wUl not be avaUable as fuel for distributed power, therefore systems for stationary co-generation are developed mainly for natural gas as the fuel. Natural gas caimot be converted directly in fuel cells but has to be reformed hydrogen is extracted in a chemical reaction, which requires temperatures... 

Pure vegetable oil can be used in some existing engines either for mobile (e.g. in cars) or stationary application (i.e. in CHP-systems), but in most cases it lowers engine lifetime and increases maintenance requirements. Therefore only under very specific frame conditions could the use of crude vegetable oils be a promising option for the transportation sector or to provide power (or decentralized electrification and heat, if required) especially in rural areas. This is true for developing as well as for industrialized countries. 

Stationary batteries are used in very varied applications Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), memory saving, decentralized power supply, grid support, etc.
