Dawn phenomenon

CONTINUOUS SUBCUTANEOUS INSULIN INFUSION A number of pumps are available for continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) therapy. CSII, or pump, therapy is not suitable for all patients because it demands considerable attention, especially during the initial phases of treatment. For patients interested in intensive insulin therapy, a pump may be an attractive alternative to several daily injections. Most pumps provide a constant basal infusion of insulin and have the option of different infusion rates during the day and night to help avoid the dawn phenomenon and bolus injections that are programmed according to the size and nature of a meal. [Pg.1048]

If die patient cannot control night time blood glucose levels on MDI even after having tried a long-acting insuUn analogue, for example, patients with dawn phenomenon where die dose of basal insulin cannot be increased due to nocturnal hypoglycaemia... [Pg.48]

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) could also explain some unsolved riddles, such as the fact that genes which normally occur in bacteria are present in some archaea. HGT has been recognised for some time, but no one realised that the phenomenon was an important principle of the development of living systems, even at the dawn of life. [Pg.277]

What is the guarantee that our minds are naturally designed to sense reality as it really is Perhaps there is no guarantee. If this concept seems weird, consider a far-fetched example. Imagine a phenomenon or a creature called a cryptozoid that has been lurking among us since the dawn of evolution. If our ancient ancestors died every time they perceived these phenomena, evolution would favor creatures who did not perceive those creatures or phenomena. [Pg.86]

However, the springtime is the dawn of Antarctica, and enough UV radiation does not reach it. Therefore, O atom mixing ratio is low, and the phenomenon cannot be explained by the ClOx cycle considering only the gas phase reactions... [Pg.410]

The Early Period. The existence of anisotropic structiu e in naturally oc-ciuring organic matter such as wood must have been realized from the dawn of history. It was not imtil much more recently, however, that this phenomenon was quantitatively studied by scientists and associated with structural models consisting of oriented units. A satisfactory picture and representation of oriented organic polymers did not come until the twentieth century. [Pg.883]

The great global glaciations were a cyclic though rather infrequent phenomenon in the history of the Earth, the oldest one recognized already at the dawn of life on our planet (Late Proterozoic Vendian Glaciation) about 600 million years ago. [Pg.116]
