The computer architect must determine the algorithm to be used in performing an arithmetic operation and mechanism to be used to convert from one representation to another. Besides the movement of data from one location to another, the arithmetic operations are the most commonly performed operations as a result, these arithmetic algorithms will significantly influence the performance of the computer. The ALU and Shifter perform most of the arithmetic operations on the datapath. 

The CVLS algorithm schedule operations so that the necessary number of FUs is under the available FU limit. However, it doesn t determine which operations share the same FUs. Therefore, in datapath allocation, the sharing among conditional mutually exclusive operation is determined first. After that, the shared operations can be handled as a non-conditional operation, and in the next step, the sharing between operation in different c-step. 

This chapter has demonstrated how VHDL can be applied in die design of datapath logic in particular, adder and multiplier drcuits. The relational and arithmetic operators that are built in to the language shotdd always be used with care because of the amount of hardware that they can produce, espedally when used inside Loop statements ...
