Data mining Internet

Both Pubchem and ChemBank are publicly available over the Internet as such they can be considered successors to the databases hosted at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The NCI data set contains more than 250,000 molecules together with biological activity obtained from their anti-cancer and HIV screens. For many years this data set was the only one of any significant size available publicly and as such it has been widely used to test new data-mining approaches [8].

New information and observations on clinical and biological research can save a life or make the sick well. But mining vast amounts of information on databases and the Internet to discover new combinations represents new facts and rules. This will be discussed in later chapters. Vast and complex assemblies of raw data are not much better than no data at all, so it is not necessarily new data but the knowledge, wisdom, insight, and action based on them that is the core of new medicine, as in any business.
