The Dandy roll on the upper surface does not dewater. It is included to improve web formation by introducing shear to the mix where it is around 2-3% consistency, when the web is very compressible. 

Dandy rolls, which are highly op>en, wire covered rolls used on fourdrinier machines ahead of the water line, for improvement of formation quality and for watermark application (Fig. 6.41). 

The fourdrinier wire (Fig. 6.38A) is the classical method of sheet formation. Speeds up to about 1200 m min are achieved with the fourdrinier. This is a reasonable limit due to excessive turbulence on the free suspension surface and dewatering capacity. Normally, the fourdrinier is equipped with a forming board, foils and/or table rolls, suction boxes, wet suction boxes, and suction rolls. Drainage proceeds in the direction of gravity. The base sheet forming concept for specialty papers is the fourdrinier. It can be used for the whole basis weight range and up to a machine speed of about 1200 m mimf In order to achieve best results concerning formation and dimensional stability Dandy rolls or hybrid formers and effective vidre shaking units are frequently used. New machines however can exceed the speed limit of fourdri-niers, so gap former concepts are used in this case.
