Another non-paint approach is being developed by Mayco and DaimlerChrysler Corp, consisting of the extrusion of a glossy, coloured film. After thermoforming to the part shape, it is placed in an injection mould, and thermoplastic is injected behind it. Cost savings are estimated to be 5 to 12 per fascia.

In addition to GM, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, Honda Motor Company, Toyota Motor Corp. and others have spent billions developing alternative-fuel vehicles. GM has vowed to become the first car-maker to sell a million fuel cell vehicles and expects to have them on the market by 2010.

The formation of these teams is often cited as the centerpiece of a Chrysler turnaround from a weak to a strong competitive position. The business success that followed made Chrysler an attractive candidate for merger with Daimler, the German producer of the Mercedes Benz.
